What We Believe
At Bread our worship begins each Sunday as we read together these words:
We gather together in the name of Jesus Christ. We are members of God’s family, brothers and sisters to one another. There are no outsiders among us. No one here has any special standing or bragging rights. We have all been brought together by the redeeming love of Jesus. Let us all join together in worship!
We believe that the church is changing and in the 21st Century women and men, young and old are looking for that which will bring meaning to their lives. We are asking questions—how can I make a difference in the world beginning in my neighborhood and
city; how can I use my money for good; does church have a word for me about how I live my life; how do I become a person of compassion; how do I love my neighbor; how do I love myself; does God love me.
We believe Christ is our center and all are welcome within the circle of his love and grace.
There is no membership requirement. There is no giving requirement. There are only two rules: 1) Everyone is welcome. 2) We will never own property - we believe it detracts from our call to be salt and light in the world.
inclusive statement.
Bread Is an Inclusive and progressive Christian community, formed in the Baptist Tradition, with influences from many Christian traditions gathering together in the name of Jesus Christ the only head of the Church. We welcome all into our circle regardless of race, gender identity, sexual orientation, age, ability, and faith background.
The Bible
We affirm that the Bible is a primary source for our beliefs and practice, but it is a book to be engaged, not worshiped. We take it seriously and not literally.
Sacraments
We observe the historic sacraments of the church, Baptism, and the Lord’s Supper.
Baptism is the entry into the life of the church while we generally practice the Baptism of Believers all Baptisms in the name of the Trinity, regardless of age or form are considered beautiful and valid.
We celebrate the Lord’s Supper or Holy Eucharist weekly and believe that by faith Christ is present with us in the simple sharing of bread and the cup. All are welcome to receive.
Testimonies Not Tests.
While Bread has no official statement of faith we tend to use historic and modern creeds to help guide our identity as a community of faith.
Apostles Creed
I believe in God, the Father almighty,
creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,
who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the Virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended to the dead.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
he is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit,
the holy catholic Church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body,
and the life everlasting. Amen.
The Alliance of Baptist Covenant
ALLIANCE COVENANT
In a time when historic Baptist principles, freedoms, and traditions need a clear voice, and in our personal and corporate response to the call of God in Jesus Christ to be disciples and servants in the world, we commit ourselves to:
1) The freedom of the individual, led by God's Spirit within the family of faith, to read and interpret the Scriptures, relying on the historical understanding by the church and on the best methods of modern biblical study;
2) The freedom of the local church under the authority of Jesus Christ to shape its own life and mission, call its own leadership, and ordain whom it perceives as gifted for ministry, male or female;
3) The larger body of Jesus Christ, expressed in various Christian traditions, and to a cooperation with believers everywhere in giving full expression to the Gospel;
4) The servant role of leadership within the church, following the model of our Servant Lord, and to full partnership of all of God's people in mission and ministry;
5) Theological education in congregations, colleges, and seminaries characterized by reverence for biblical authority and respect for open inquiry and responsible scholarship;
6) The proclamation of the Good News of Jesus Christ and the calling of God to all peoples to repentance and faith, reconciliation and hope, social and economic justice;
7) The principle of a free church in a free state and the opposition to any effort either by church or state to use the other for its own purposes.
The New Creed
We are not alone,
we live in God’s world.
We believe in God: who has created and is creating who has come in Jesus, the Word made flesh, to reconcile and make new, who works in us and others by the Spirit. We trust in God.
We are called to be the Church: to celebrate God’s presence, to live with respect in Creation to love and serve others, to seek justice and resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, crucified and risen, our judge and our hope. In life, in death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone.
Thanks be to God.
